1959 Pink Thunderbird
by James Mclure.
Comprising two one act plays:
Laundry and Bourbon Directed by Sally Marsh
and
Lone Star Directed by Neil Coates
Corpus Christi Playroom, St Edwards Passage, Cambridge
23 to 27 September 2008
In the first piece, Laundry & Bourbon, the action
centres on the discontent and gossip of three small town wives whose marriages
have turned out to be less than they hoped for. On a hot summer afternoon,
Elizabeth and her friend Hattie sit out on the porch folding laundry,
sipping bourbon and coke and gossiping. They are joined by the self-righteous
Amy Lee who cannot resist blurting out that Elizabeth's husband Roy has
been seen around town with another woman. Whilst the ensuing conversation
is increasingly edged with bitter humour, there emerges nevertheless a
sense of Elizabeth's inner strength and her quiet understanding of the
turmoil which has beset her husband since his return from Vietnam.
Lone Star, the second piece, takes place in the cluttered backyard of a small town Texas bar. Roy, who had once been a local high school hero, is back in town after a hitch in Vietnam, and trying to re-establish his position in the community. Joined by his younger brother, Ray, he sets about consuming a case of Lone Star beer whilst relating tales of his military and amorous exploits. Apparently Roy cherishes three things above all: his country, his sexy wife and his 1959 pink Thunderbird. With the arrival of Cletis, the fatuous, newly-wed son of the local hardware store owner, the pillars of Roy's world begin to collapse...
